Agostina Segatori Sitting in the Café du Tambourin
Agostina Segatori Sitting in the Café du Tambourin – I think this piece captures well the pensive mood portrayed by Miss Segatori. She was by all accounts a woman well ahead of her time – only a fiercely independent woman would own and run a restaurant in Paris in the late 1800’s. She looks careworn yet so stylish in her flowing skirt and red plume. She enjoys a cigarette and a glass of beer and stares off perhaps daydreaming or simply watching others stroll along the Boulevard de Clichy. I love the colors Van Gogh chose for this painting; the bright yellow chairs and whisps of blue from one of his own Japanese inspired pieces that dot the background and the vibrant red-orange and yellow of the tambourine-shaped table and chairs that frame the foreground.
