Pollard Willow
Pollard Willow – What I wanted to convey with this composition was a sense of loss and melancholy. Van Gogh’s dead/dying willow set forefront to an on-coming storm leans to one side as if to search out some ray of sunlight, or some source of life. The idle trains are set darkly against the train station – the only sign of life; the greening grass, a figure in the distance and a man walking along a muddy trail that passes near the tree. Everything about this watercolor portrays a loneliness and I tried to capture that by using some rather brooding minor chordal movement free of strict time.
