Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

Seascapes Near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer – This is one of the paintings Van Gogh signed, in a bold red no less. In it, he captures the roiling shallows of the Mediterranean Sea, three small boats bobbing in the waves, and wisps of clouds overhead.  The colors in this painting are truly amazing – the range of blues alone is staggering and the change in water depth is portrayed both in thickness of paint and subtle blue-to-green transitions. Upon very close inspection of the actual painting, you’ll find grains of sand imbedded in the paint – proving Van Gogh was standing right there on the shore when he captured this moment.  This painting is full of movement, so I used clustered chords in an arbitrary pattern along with an equally arbitrary rhythm to try to mimic that movement.
